A. E. Hotchner grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where he eventually studied as an undergraduate at Washington University, and then at the Washington University Law School, from which he graduated with the degree of Doctor of Law. After practicing law for two years, Mr. Hotchner entered the Air Force, served a stint with the Anti-Submarine Command, and wound up as chief European correspondent for Air Force Magazine. After the war, he became an editor at Cosmopolitan for a short while, then turned to free-lance writing.

In addition to writing more than three hundred articles and short stories for such publications as Es-quire, Saturday Evening Post and Collier's, Mr. Hotchner has written plays—The White House, starring Helen Hayes, was performed on Broadway in 1964—and many original dramas for television, of which the best known is a Playhouse 90 presentation, Last Clear Chance, that starred Paul Muni. He has also dramatized many of Hemingway's novels and stories, notably For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Mr. Hotchner's memoir Papa Hemingway, published in 1966, was an international best-seller. His adventure novel, Treasure, published in 1970, has also been extensively published abroad. He is currently preparing a comedy for Broadway and is at work on a new book.
